Bernice Elaine Gears Mason passed away peacefully on November 12, 2015, at Blossom Nursing and Rehab Center. She was born on December 7, 1917, in Lisbon to William Henry Gears and Emma Rogers Gears. She lived her entire life in Lisbon and graduated from David Anderson High School in 1935. She worked at R. Thomas & Sons Pottery until her marriage to Richard T. Mason on November 11, 1946.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and sisters: Phyllis Crihfield, Wilhelmina Cain, Sarah Irene Gears, Mary Gears, and Margarette Gears.
She is survived by her children, Albert G.Mason of Lisbon and Valerie Mason Bertsch of Chagrin Falls. Also surviving is a grandson, Evan Mason Bertsch of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, who she described as “ the light of her life.” She will also be missed by her devoted friend, Diann Moore.
Bernice was a member of the First Christian Church of Lisbon, Ohio for her entire life, and was active in all aspects of the church while she was able. She served as deaconess, taught Sunday School, and was active in CWF. She was awarded “Most Valiant Woman” in 1993 by Lisbon Area Church Women United. Her other gifts included, sewing, knitting, candy making, and pie baking, for which she was well known. She entered 2 quilts in the 2014 Johnny Appleseed Festival Quilt Show, and won three ribbons, including Best In Show.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, November 28, at the First Christian Church, East Washington St., Lisbon, with Pastor Douglas Shoaff officiating. Burial will be in the Lisbon Cemetery.
