Hanoverton - Charles G. Spriggs, 81, passed away Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at St. Mary’s Alzheimer’s Center.
He was born September 27, 1932 in New Cumberland, WV, a son of the late George W. and Inez M. (Balser) Spriggs.
A life-long area resident, he will be remembered as a hard worker having worked as a riverboat captain for J & L Steel for 18 years, 6 years trip piloting, and 11 years for Consol Energy. Following retirement, he cut grass at Carriage Hill for 10 years.
A 1950 graduate of Wellsville High School, he was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, a past member of the Lisbon Lions Club and Wellsville Fraternal Order of Eagles. He cared for seven foster-children and volunteered at the Tobin Center. He enjoyed farming with his horses. His passion was his family and helping others.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy A. (Cosgrove) Spriggs, whom he married January 26, 1963; 5 children: Cheryl (Thomas) Gillen of Locust Grove, GA, John Spriggs of Huntsville, Alabama, Mary Ellen (Robert) Watson of Aurora, Sue (Richard) Ashead of Alexandria, PA, and Linda Spriggs of Stow, OH. There are 11 grandchildren: Alexia, Jessica, and Conrad Custer, Alex Mickens., Caitlyn Spriggs, Ashley and April Burton, Andrew, Whitney, and Jayna Ashead, and Cierra Spriggs as well as 2 great-grandchildren and a sister Wilma Jean Johnson of Kingsland, TX.
His sister Vivien McIntosh preceded him in death.
Calling hours are 7 to 9 PM Friday at the funeral home. The funeral will be at 11:00 AM Saturday at the funeral Home. Burial will follow at Grove Hill Cemetery in Hanoverton.
