Salem - Dean Senanefes, 85, died at 3:42 PM Thursday at Essex I of Salem following a lengthy illness.
Born July 8, 1930 in Lisbon, he was a son of the late Nicholas D. and Helen (Tsafaridis) Senanefes.
Dean had owned several small businesses including Dean’s Top Hat, Buckeye Beverage, and Dean’s Ice. He also worked as a machinist for NRM for 18 years, retiring in 1991.
He is survived by His wife Barbara whom he married June 5, 1976, his son Stephen of Cincinnati, and his brother Charlie of Lisbon and two grandchildren, Dean M. Senanefes and Clayton S. Gast.
He was preceded in death by his sister Kathryn Kuzma and his brothers Thomas and James.
An Air Force Veteran of the Korean War and life-long member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church where he served on the parish council, he was a Red Cross volunteer for 25 years where he taught first aid classes. He was a volunteer fireman for 20 years, and he had over 70 years of service in scouting including 20 years as scout master of troop 92. He was an Eagle Scout and mapped the Sandy Beaver Trail. He took two years full time to develop a scout troop for the developmentally disabled at the Robert Bycroft School and made three trips to the Philmont, New Mexico Scout Ranch with the troop. He also volunteered at United Local Schools for many years and was a charter member of the Lisbon Lions Club.
Services will be held at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church in Youngstown at 11:00 AM Monday. Burial will be in Lisbon Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 5 PM Sunday at the Weber Funeral Home, Lisbon. a Trisagion service will be held at 4:30 PM
