Lisbon -           Gary Phillips, 74, passed away at Salem Regional Medical Center at 1:05 AM Thursday, January 17, 2019.

Born March 25, 1944 in Pittsburgh, he was a son of the late William L. and Norma J. (Hammond) Phillips.

He was a social studies teacher and athletic trainer at Beaver Local High School where he was affectionately known as “Doc.” He retired in 2002. He was also a deputy sheriff in Mt. Gilead, OH.

He was a graduate of Trinity High School in Washington, PA where he wrestled and played football. He earned several degrees from Morehead State University, Kent State University, Youngstown State University, and Ball State University. He held a master’s degree in higher education. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Lisbon.

Gary married his colleague Karen Bellomy in 2002. She preceded him in death July 27, 2016. He was an active and passionate democrat and was proud to have met Presidents Carter and Clinton. He also served as local chairperson of their respective campaigns. He was a travel enthusiast, visiting all 50 states and several countries.

There will be a funeral service officiated by the Rev. Dr. Wayne Clark at 7:00 PM Monday at the Weber Funeral Home. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Private burial will be in Columbiana County Memorial Park on Tuesday.
