Gary Pike, native and lifetime resident of Lisbon, passed away at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, Boardman Campus, at 2:55 a.m., January 1, 2014. He was the son of Clyde B. and Margaret (Lewis) Pike.
He attended Lisbon Schools and as a student was active in its activities. He later received bachelor’s and master’s degrees respectively from The University of Muskingum and Kent State University and returned to Lisbon to be an integral part of the Lisbon Exempted Village School System for his entire educational career, serving as a teacher, guidance counselor and elementary principal. He enjoyed coaching football and was head basketball coach and was involved as a sponsor of many extracurricular activities. After retirement from the school system, he was elected to the Lisbon Board of Education where he served several terms.
For the next 15 years he thoroughly enjoyed his second career as Director of the Senior Aides Program funded by the federal government. This program enabled age 55 and over adults to be employed by non-profit agencies with the ultimate goal of being hired by the agency, thus creating additional jobs throughout Columbiana County.
Gary was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church, currently the New Lisbon Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher and Superintendent of the Sunday School, a member of the Board of Elders and the Clerk of the Session. He remained an active member of the church until the last two years.
Gary so enjoyed meeting and befriending people of all ages. He was especially delighted upon hearing of one of his former students who had done well with his life and then could remember an anecdote of the student’s youth.
He was so elated when he was able to attend the 2003 Final Four in New Orleans and watch “his team”, the Syracuse Orange, participate and ultimately win the big prize and then be able to celebrate with the team and the staff.
Favorite activities included golfing with friends and going to lunch at various local restaurants on Tuesdays with the Nutrition Club, watching college basketball and PGA Golf events on television. In the past he also attended PGA Golf Tournaments throughout the tri-state area.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Judy (Ramsey), a son Bradley (Lynne) and loved and adored grandchildren Ryan and Emily Pike of Jamesville, NY. A brother, Thomas (Georgette) of Kensington, MD, sister-in-law Nancy (Robert) Dickey, brother-in-law John (Jane) Ramsey were all dear to his heart. Other survivors include nieces and nephews Chris Pike (Liz), Eric (Diana) Pike, Michelle Pike, Ann (Justin) Metzler, Sarah Dickey, Matthew (Heather) Ramsey, Benjamin (Katie) Dickey, Mark Ramsey and Todd (Lindsay) Ramsey. Six great-nephews and three great-nieces round out the immediate family survivors.
Preceding him in death were a son, Scott A., parents Clyde B. and Margaret (Lewis) Pike and brother Roger.
It is suggested that donations be made to the Lisbon Cemetery, 1 Elm St., Lisbon for the establishment of an outdoor, above-ground area for interment urns.
Calling hours will be at Weber Funeral Home, Lisbon, OH on Thursday, Jan. 2 from 6-8 pm. Services will be held at the New Lisbon Presbyterian Church, Lisbon at 11 am on Friday with family visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Rev. Mark Wilds will be the presiding clergy. Burial will be at a later date in Lisbon Cemetery.
The family extends heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the staff of Sterling House, Salem, OH and to the residents who enriched and shared much love with Gary.
