Lisbon -James Ralph Pappas, Sr., 88, passed away peacefully with his family at his side following a short illness at 8:25 PM Saturday, October 2, 2010 at the Vista Center.
Born February 28, 1922 in Ambridge, PA, he was a son of the late Samuel and Bertha (Shepherd) Pappas.
He was retired from the Deming Pump Company where he worked as a machinist. He had also owned and operated Martin's Gas Station and Josie's Ashland in Lisbon for many years.
A WW II Army veteran, he was a member of St. George Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and V.F.W. Post 4111. He enjoyed gardening and being with his grandchildren.
Survivors include four children: Joe (Cathy) Pappas of Wellsville, Judy Swartz of Salem, Janis (James) Pancurak) and Jean (Fred) Gough, both of Lisbon; daughter-in-law Carol Pappas of New Cumberland, WV; 16 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren; brothers Andy Pappas of Florida and George Pappas of California; as well as a sister, Virginia Hendryx of California.
He was preceded in death in 1993 by his wife, the former Josie Motto, whom he married July 4, 1945. Also deceased are a son, James Ralph Pappas, Jr., grandson Nicholas Gough, brother Gus Pappas, and sister Agnes Carnes.
Services will be held at 10:00 AM Thursday at the Weber Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Edwards officiating. Burial will be in Lisbon Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM Wednesday at the Funeral Home.
