Lisbon- John Henry Halverstadt, 93, passed away at 12:07 AM Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at Salem Community Hospital.
Born July 27, 1918 in Leetonia, he was a son of the late Horace and Grace (Bartholow) Halverstadt.
He worked as an installer and lineman at Ohio Bell for 37 years, retiring in 1975.
A life-long area resident, he was a WW II Army Veteran . He was a member of St. Jacobs United Church of Christ where he served in the Consistory and as a Deacon. He was the longest living member of the church. Other memberships included New Lisbon F and AM No. 65; Past Patron of Iva Chapter Order of the Eastern Star, Job's Daughters, and Demalay; Lamplighters Sunday School Class, Wednesday Evening Discussion, and Ohio Bell Pioneers Club. He was also active in the Halverstadt Family Reunion Foundation and was an avid tinkerer.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth (Redick) Halverstadt whom he married May 12, 1941; 5 children: Jan Halverstadt of Clearwater, FL, David (Rebecca) Halverstadt of Salem, Kathy (Terry) Apple of Charlotte, NC, Kim (Stevie) Halverstadt of Lisbon, and Kay (Brian) Ewing of Oak Harbor; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; and 3 nieces.
He was preceded in death by his sister Margaret (Peggy) Cook and an infant brother.
Services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at the St. Jacob's United Church of Christ with the Rev. Jenna Brown officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A Masonic service will be held at 9:45 AM and military honors will be provided by the Salem Honor Guard.
