Lisbon -Samuel J. Sowards, Sr. passed away July 4, 2010 at Salem Community Hospital.
He was born July 22, 1928 in Logan, WV, the son of the late Faye Murriel (Atkins) Sowards Butcher and Robert Crayton Sowards.
Sam lived with his family in Baltimore, MD before they relocated to Lisbon. He served in the United States Air Force and is a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the D.A.V. Sam always took a special interest in local Democratic party politics throughout his life.
Sam worked as a private construction contractor in the area, a project engineer for the Ohio Department of Transportation, and in Southern California as a project supervisor for the Department of the Navy. Upon retirement, he returned to Lisbon to farm once again.
Mr. Sowards leaves behind daughter Constance Sowards of Palm Coast, FL; son Samuel Joe Sowards and his wife Callie; grandchildren Tyler Xavier Sowards and Ryan Patrick Sowards, all of Lisbon. He also leaves behind a brother, Don Sowards of Calcutta as well as his ex-wife and special friend Mary Evelyn Sowards Watterson of Flagler Beach, FL.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his step-father, Ernie Butcher, and siblings Lew Sowards, Jenny Sowards Knight, and Ernest Sowards.
The family is appreciative of the support of Sam's First United Methodist Church family and is requesting that memorial contributions be made to the Lisbon church.
A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, July 9th at the First United Methodist Church of Lisbon with the Rev. Pam Gable officiating.
Arrangements are being handled by the Weber Funeral Home.
